The New Taipei City Art Museum made a fun exhibition for families called "New Taipei City : What's Blooming" . It wants people to walk around and explore the museum's cool, open spaces — and while they do, draw their own dream of what New Taipei City could look like.
A Big Open Space Isn't Enough — Kids Need a Reason to Explore
At the start, we faced a few challenges: How do we get kids and parents excited to explore on their own? What should they take away from the experience? And since "a dream for New Taipei" is such a big, fuzzy idea, we worried kids wouldn't know what to draw.
Stamp by Stamp, Petal by Petal
To give kids direction — and a way to bring their dreams to life — we combined a stamp-collecting game, glowing tile patterns, a drawing machine, data, and math that makes flowers move. Yingge's decorative tiles and Taiwan's wildflowers inspired a set of stamps. Kids collect them by exploring the whole museum, and once they have enough, they can activate the machine: the "Run Run Flowbot."
After collecting all 12 petal stamps, kids return to draw their vision of the future city on a tablet — a house, a train, a group of friends. AI reads their drawing, and the "Run Run Flowbot" turns it into a flower, "planted" on a big map of New Taipei. The stamp sheet becomes a personal keepsake, and the flower-covered map becomes something everyone made together. At night, a light-up "Blooming Welcome" sign turns the wildflowers into glowing digital tiles, so the fun continues after dark.
Building the machine was its own challenge. Working with New Zealand artist Tiago, the team found that many parts and tools weren't available in Taiwan. So they built a glossary to match up terms and tracked down substitute materials to get it built.
Fun for All Five Senses — and Data That Keeps Helping the City
The "Run Run Flowbot" became one of the exhibition's most popular features, turning a simple drawing activity into an active, full-museum game. Every house, train, or group of friends kids drew became an AI-generated flower on the map of New Taipei — and the data collected helps inform real city planning, extending the exhibit's impact beyond the museum.
