For this year's Chiayi City Expo Wooden Wonders Pavilion, we partnered with Dutch architecture firm MVRDV to create an immersive experience blending interactive technology with projection mapping. Through visual storytelling, we communicated Chiayi's vision of evolving into "Wood City 3.0" while responding to the expo's "320+1" call to action, making every visitor part of the city's story.

"Structure" as the Thread Connecting Past and Future

We faced two challenges: How do we convey the spirit of "320+1"? And how do we respond to the curatorial team's concept of "Forest, Sound, Life"? We chose "structure" as our core narrative thread, connecting Chiayi's evolution from Wood City 1.0 to 3.0. The exhibition features a main show, Wooden Structures, Green Living, and an interactive standby mode, Wooden Structures, Chiayi Houses. The main show begins with Chen Cheng-po's painting Looking towards Chiayi, unfolding through the narrative arc of "Wood, Structure, Industry, Community, Joy" to showcase Chiayi's harmony with nature, artisan wisdom, industrial vitality, and ultimately, a vision of sustainable living. "Structure" not only references the physical framework of wooden houses but also symbolizes the reconstruction and regeneration of the city's culture.

Building Personal Imprints on the Wall

For the interactive component, we designed a wooden house building game that echoes Chiayi's wooden city identity while helping visitors learn about the structural features of traditional wooden houses. Through their phones, participants select historic wooden buildings, drag and drop components, assemble their creations, and name them. Once completed, their houses are instantly projected onto the wall, leaving a personal imprint.

We discovered this interaction wasn't just fun—many people treated the naming feature like a message board, using it in ways we never anticipated! Even better, when the main show ended and visitors saw their wooden houses still displayed on the wall, that moment of delighted surprise was exactly what we were going for.
