The Storytelling Museum
During the 2023 Creative Expo Taiwan, the National Railway Museum "unboxed" its phased preservation and restoration achievements to the public. We were honored to participate in this cultural event through the creation and execution of the "National Railway Museum Vision Projection Mapping Show," breathing life into this century-old landmark alongside the museum. Our goal was to transform Taipei Railway Workshop into not just a "living museum" but also a "storytelling museum."
Under the concept of "A New Beginning," we utilized the technique of "Projection Mapping" and curated exhibits to transcend spatial constraints. We turned the cramped lobby area into a journey through time spanning centuries, allowing viewers to witness the broader development history of the National Railway Museum. By integrating architectural models with projection mapping, we showcased the future blueprint of the museum's preservation, restoration, and phased opening to the public. We invited everyone to join us in anticipating the future of the museum and the Taipei Railway Workshop.
Who Says Small Spaces Can't Tell Big Stories
The "National Railway Museum Vision Projection Mapping Show," executed and created by IF Plus, took place in the lobby area of the museum's main office. Despite the limited space, this area not only witnessed a century of Taiwan's railway history but also marked the starting point for the museum's next phase of openness. Just like the future vision of "A New Beginning" for the National Railway Museum, we aimed to tell this consequential story well, thinking outside the box to ensure that even this small space could convey a grand narrative.
Considering the size of the exhibition space and the user experience, we decided to incline the architectural model that was originally laid flat. This adjustment allowed viewers to comfortably observe the artwork without needing to bend over. Through the narrative and perspective design in the projection mapping show, visitors could follow along as the animation guided them step-by-step through the evolution, revitalization, and transformation of the museum.
In addition to the integration of curation concepts and projection mapping, this project encompassed various content materials such as building model design, color schemes, background sound sampling, story script development, train exterior depiction and modeling, music, and sound effects. We consulted experts from various fields to meticulously consider every tiny detail. We even invited former railway announcers to record voiceovers for the animation, all to create the most immersive exhibition experience and captivating content possible. When the announcer smoothly transitioned into the animation, saying in a professional and friendly tone, "Hello, those traveling on Train 2027 to the National Railway Museum, please proceed to the platform," It felt like we were truly boarding a train filled with stories and visions, ready to depart from Taipei Railway Workshop towards the future of "A New Beginning" for the museum.
Hidden Gems within the Exhibition
Besides the exhibition design and projection mapping, we incorporated the National Railway Museum's logo into the structural design of the model display stand. We transformed the otherwise ordinary display stand supports into three-dimensional pieces that vividly evoke the essence of the museum. By combining the light and shadow effects of moving trains, we added the silhouette of a train traversing a railway bridge to the space. As the projection mapping gradually unfolds the past and future of the railway base, passengers journey alongside, discovering the next destination of the National Railway Museum.
